Barnby is located in the Waveney Valley, between Beccles and Lowestoft. It has 400 registered voters (2015). About half of the parish is drained marshland used for grazing and much of the remainder is arable or pastoral divided into 3 farms. The parish has St John the Baptist, a Grade 1 listed church, a recently closed (2014) Methodist church, a thriving Primary School, a garden centre and the award-winning Barnby Swan. The village shop and Post Office closed in 2012.

Above is the new village sign, below is an aerial view of the village in 2000, looking south.
